LAWN TENNIS
AIRING DISPUTES
OVERSEAS TOURING TEAMS
A meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association Council wa9 held last evening. Mr. A. G. Henderson presided. Tt was decided after lengthy discussion that it was in the interests of the game of tennis and its satisfactory administration that affiliated associations should not make use of the Press for the purpose of ventilating any disagreement with the decisions of the management committee, and that the proper place for any such disagreement to be made known was at a meeting of the council. The-chairman stated that the management committee had had ' considerable trouble and was much embarrassed by some local associations airing their Grievances through the Press. Mr. L.' A. Tracy said that there had been recently cases where associations had slowed their views about touring teams to be ventilated in the Press before matches were held and while visitors were still in the country. On several -occasions the nrst intimation the management committee had had of a dispute had been when mention wos made of it in a newspaper. Ihe chairman stated that it was not the wish of the management committee to exclude the Press from meetings of local associations, but it was considered that when such matters cropped up they should be dealt with in committee. In connection with visits by overseas teams, Mr. L. A. Tracy moved that the council disapprove of affiliated district associations inviting direct tennis teams from outside New Zealand, and instruct the management committee to refuse all such applications unless the invitations and negotiations were made through the N .Z.L.I .A. after the committee had .approved of the personnel, terms offered, and proposed itinerary. There was a sharp conflict of opinion on the matter, and eventually an amendment by Dr. A. Park was carried. It was to the effect that the council approve the principle of local associations inviting overseas teams, subject to the consent of the management committee as to the itinerary and personnel of such teams. The chairman announced that Mr. P. W. Eootham, a vice-president of the English Association, had been appointed to act with the captain of the New Zealand Davis Gup Team, E. D. Andrews, as selector^ Satisfactory financial arrangements had been made for sending Home C K. Malfroy, the Dominion singles chamI pio'n, and the team would have opportunity to practise together. Authority had been given to employ a coach if necessary. Mr. Henderson added Hint it was hoped an invitation might be received for the team to play in the French championships, which would take place shortly before the Davia Cup matches.
