WORSE THAN LONDON
The opinion that, li.tvas safer to walk across Trafalgar Square in. London than Cathedral Square in Christchurch was expressed, by Mr. J. W. Mawson, formerly Director of Town Planning in New Zealand. ' Mr. Mawson, in his former official capacity, drew.up a scheme for the rearrangement of Cathedral Square, and he was naturally very^interested in the imprdvements' that have been carried out to the Godloy plot since he -was last there.' He stated to a "Times" reporter that he was'pleased to see the Godley statue restored to its original site, and he .thought the design - of the plot was a very tasteful one. '' It doesn't begin to touch the traffic problem, however," he said. "Personally, having just returned from. London, I.would far rather-walk across Trafalgar Square than Cathedral Square. I'm •perfectly sure I' could do so with far less risk to myself. One essential to a solution of the traffic problem in Cathedral Square is to shut off all cross traffic. The traffic should be made to circulate round the whole of the square on a one-way system. The fundamental • idea in dealing with all traffic today is to make it as far as possible flow m the same channels. I-don't think I have ever seen a site that adapts itself hotter to ' circu7atory traffic than Cathedral Square."
