John Lawless, who on July 29, 1918, sank a German submarine singlehanded, was fined £1 at F.alkirk .for defrauding a labour exchange.and re-, ceiving benefit whilo employed. at the docks. ■ : Lawless was serving on the steamer Clover in the Western Isles wh'en a Xlboat was encountered. Tho passengers and crow were ordered to leave the ship. Lawless disobeyed and remained aboard and ultimately sank the submarine. Afterwards he was taken before a tribunal and reprimanded for disobedience in the face of the enemy. He" was then awarded the D.S.M. . Tho defence stated that Lawless ?• fraud was really an act of bravado.;
