MUCH PROGRESS MADE
i'ha liouse of worked long hours yesterday, Sitting from 10.30 a.m. till 1.15 a.m. today* Practically the whole of the morning was devoted to the imports of Select Committees (6f Which there were many), alid in tho afternoon and for a portion of the evClting local Bills engaged the attention of members. Two of these Bills were- of ■Wellington interest: the Wellington City Empowering and Special Hates Consolidation Amendment Bill and the Petono and Lower Hutt Gas-lighting Amendment Bill. Two Napier Bills were discussed for sonip. considerable time, and it was approaching midnight when thfl Prime Minister asked for urgency for the second reading oi seven Government Bills. Wig House was in a working (Or tired) mood, and Sbc of the Bills wero read a second time with but little discussion. They were the Motor Spirits (Itegulation of Prices) Bill, the Education Law Amendment Bill (Which provides for the extension of the tenure of school committees from one year to two), the Poor Prisoners'' Defence Bill (Which gives p-fiadnefsi who have not the .means to engage counsel the right to do so without disclosing their defence, thus placing them on the same fasting as ordinary, prisoners), the Land Transfet1 Attieniiment Bill (a technical measure rendered necessary as a result of the Hawke's Bay earthquake destroying Certaifi doeti<meftts), the Cafd fiegula* tiott Bill (which legalises! -the hdlding of card tournaments by School cbm'mit' tees), and the Valuation of. Land Amendment Bill (obviatifig discrepancies ill the present law relatiilg to land Valuations). OH the suggestion of the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. M. j. Savage) the second reading of the Coal' mines Amendment Bill was postponed tilt toddy. •: : v The H6USe adjottftted at 1.15 a.m. till 10.30 a.m. tdday.
