MONDAY'S SPORTS
W. OGG RUNS WELL
NOTES AND COMMENTS
The entries for the evening meeting at the Basin Ecserve on Monday showed a further en.couraging increase, there being, for instance, about 25 competitors in the 600 yards handicap. However, as was the case at the previous meeting, tho number of spectators was very poor indeed, and this is a rather surprising fact when it is remembered that there is no charge for admission to the ground. Certainly there are collection boxes at the gates, but these appear to be practically ignored, the takings at a recent gathering amounting to the magnificent sum of 7s. The performance of W. Ogg (Olympic), Wellington provincial half-mile champion, in the GOO yards handicap is worthy of note. Ogg was the only scratch man in a large field, and finished second to B. Hedges, also of Olympic, who had a 25 yards' start. This was Ogg's first appearance of the season. K. Jacksoii (Scottish Harriers) also showed good form in winning the 100 yards B grade scratch event. In tho 100 yards .women's handicap Miss D. Hurley (Wellington), after winning the first heat, also won the final from Miss M". Watson (Kiwi). Miss Hurley did not shine last season, but at an earlier meeting this season won ono of the women's events. It appears that has given her some encouragement, arid it is pleasing to note her improvement. Miss Thelma Konch (Wellington) proved rather a disappointment, her inability to overhaul Miss Watson, of the Kiwi Club, in the women's relay being particularly noticeable.
