TAXING SMOKERS TO HELP FARMERS.

The Federal Government has put an additional 6d per lb duty on imported tobacco leaf. The present rate is 3s per lb, and the resolution increased it to 3s 6d per lb. The Government had decided upon this course principally to meet additional commitments arising from the decision to aid wheat farmers. About £225,000 a year increased revenue would be obtained. For the present financial year it would be £130,000. The tax will also,help tobacco growers.
