RED CROSS WORK
SERVICE TO OTHERS
PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
A large attendance of people interested in the work of the Red Cross Society witnessed the presentation of the awards gained by members of the Wellington peacetime centre. The ceremony was held in the Town Hall last evening. In a short address, Mr. C. H. Chapman, M P., chairman of the Wellington peacetime centre of the society, said that the organisation aimed particularly at service to others who needed'assistance. It was devoted to the relief of suffering, and carried out a genuine service to the community. ' . Much of the work of the society consisted in inculcating a knowledge of firstaid and hygiene into adults as well as children. In this connection, the work of Sisters Lewis and Aitken was invaluable. These sisters and some forty classes under their tuition. Over a thousand children and about a hundred adults received instructions in the various sections of the work. All those who underwent a course of training were better for it. In the future they would be better citizens as they would not only have finer ideals, but would be able to apply the knowledge gained for the benefit of tlieir fellows. .... An excellent programme of recitation, song, and dance was provided by pupils of schools and by several well-known local amateurs. Among those who performed were Masters I. and J; Galloway, Glennie and I. Lewis, Misses Joan Chandler.
