Wheeler, chairman of the Okarito Five Mile Beach Gold Dredging Co., presiding at the annual meeting of the company, reviewed the work of the dredge and remarked that the reports received from the dredgemaster showed that the position now was much the same as at; the beginning of the year. Considerable trouble had been experienced as a result of encountering stony ground. The dredge, it had to be remembered, was designed for dealing with sand, and the stones encountered made for loss of time. Mr. Wheeler went on to speak of the transport troubles which had been encountered from the very commencement of the company's activities, and stated that there was little improvement now. During the year the pipe line had become so long that there had been a shortage of pipes. He referred to the work now proceeding of laying a new pipe line. Speaking of the position of the dredge at the present time, the chairman said that early this month more trouble had been experienced with stones and gravel in the boxes. The question was now being considered of fitting the dredge with shaker tables. Reference was also made by the chairman to the assistance that was being given by the Australian Government to the goldmining industry in the Commonwealth, and he quoted the following figures showing the amount paid to the Government during the past year directly and indirectly through the operations of the company:— Gold export tax, £2131; claim rent, £59; unemployment tax on employees' wages, £162; tax on dividends, £700; income tax for 1934-35, £1888; making- a total of £4940. The report and accounts were adopted. The' following report relates to the four weeks from November 5 to December 2:— Total gold won, 1290z 17dwt; total time worked, 441 hours; total non-working time, 135 hours; total yardage treated, 25,500 (an average of 38',cubic yards per hour); average value of ground, 4.8 d per cubic yard (on basis of gold worth £4 per ounce).
