CURIE TAKES WAINUI
A CHARACTERISTIC EFFORT
A characteristically brilliant performance gave Curie a meritorious success in the Wainui Handicap. At Wauganui a few weeks ago he appeared to be going olf slightly, but the interval since lias1 enabled him to freshen up, and he wore down his opposition yesterday in his very best style. He came to Trentham looking a very fit horse, aud it was his fitness that told in a hard finish. He is supreme among the present milcrs in the Dominion, aud if he races again at the meeting he will be hard to beat in spite of mounting weight.
Kerbside began fast and settled down to set a solid pace from Playground and Speed, True Shaft, Curie, Forestry, Nightly, Aga Khan, and Miladi. The only changes that occurred in the middle running was that Forestry and Nightly lost their positions. Once landed in the straight the leaders retired, and for a moment it looked as if True Shaft was going to bring off a surprise; but Curie and Miladi challenged him nearing the distance, and they finished too strongly for him out on the track for Curie to win by a' good neck from Miladi. Forestry got through near the fence to deprive True Shaft of third place on the post, and Nightly, running on, was next, followed by Kerbside/ Aiguille, Aga Khan, Speed, Playground, and Midinette.
The first pair home were proven easy best in the field, but Forestry, Nightly, and Aga Khan probably did not have the clearest pi , passages. Miladi never looked like getting to the winner, but she registered a stylish performance for first time up since the winter, and she is liable to win a race before the meeting closes, as the long Trentbam straight suits her. Forestry finished more determinedly than he did at Masterton, and it is now fairly clear that he required that race. He is another whom a long .straight suits. True Shaft also went an excellent race, conipulsorily out on the track all the way, which ' filially cost, him third placing. Nightly was somewhat disappointing, but possibly, as appeared, he encountered some early trouble. The distance beat Kerbside/Aga Khan would , have been closer had-an opening not closed on him in the straight.- Midinette was always in the rear.' . ■ : .
