THE BEST BREED

So often is the question asked as to which is .the best beed that reference to breed and-strain must be-made again. The novice naturally wants to know

j .which is the best breed to keep, and he must bo taught to realise tho importance of strain.. A good strain is not essentially 0110 founded on high egg producers, but rather one which will give a high average flock production. , Undoubtedly the White Leghorn ■ is- the most popular egg producer we have in New Zealand. The utility Black Orpingtoii, sometimes called the Australorp, is a good second, tfhilst there are strains of other breeds which are of very good value. So much depends on tho requirements of the owner as to which breed'he will select for his flock, and in this, respect no better advice can be given than to consult a neighbouring poultrynmn. It' the novice will spend a little, time visiting commercial; egg producers ho will soon acquiro valuable information. That the dual purpose breeds are becoming more popular is quite evident, but so long as the demand for table'poultry remains poor, or rather so long as the prices offering for good quality table poultry remain low, then tin production of-table poultry is not likely ifco show- high profits.- Perhaps one of tho reasons why the demana f<Jr table poultry is not keener is to be found in the large number of old light brted hens which flood. o.ur : markets- every year. Such birds are not choice tabla birds.:
