KEEN CONTEST
MARJORIE HANNAH SPEECH
The "Marjorie Hannah" speech competition was held at Wellington "Girls' College this week. This is an annual event, and it always gives rise to keen competition among the students. There were over forty entries, out of which eight were selected to speak in the finals, in the presence of the whole school, staff, parents, and three judges.
Tho college was very much indebted to Professor H. Cornish, Mrs. Craig McKenzie, and Miss Esma North, who kindly acted as judges.
The eight competitors selected to speak in the finals were as follows: — Gwen Bearsley, who spoke on "Captain Scott"; Olive Wilkinson, "Florence Nightingale"; Winnie Aitken, "Sarah Bernhardt"; Nancy Bullen, "Martin Luther"; Lurline Garratt, "Cecil Rhodes"; Anne Mitchell, "Florence Nightingale"; Gwen Robyns, "Mussolini," and Gwen Dallaston, "Kagawa" '(a Japanese celebrity). The contest was won by Gwen Robyns. The judges complimented the students on the high standard of the speeches, specially emphasising the clear enunciation and the marked absence of any New Zealand accent.
