Mr. G. Y. Berry, who was elected at a by-election to fill a vacancy on th» Eastbourne Borough Council, was sworn-in at last evening's meeting of. tho council. The Mayor (Mr. E. W. Wise) welcomed Mr. Berry, and said he hoped he would have a happy time oa the council. Mr. Berry suitably replied. . :. . . . ' ..
Mr. H. McDougall, who has been in. Dunedin for some years and has beea transferred back to Wellington, arrived this morning from the south. Ho was accompanied by his wifo and daughter. ' - ■ ■ ■
The death is reported, last 'weekend of Mr. Edgar Jones, of Timaru, at tho age of 83. Mr. Jones was one. of the pioneers of the back country of Canter-! bury. He arrived at Lyttelton by the barqno Lancashire Witch in 1807 .and; immediately took up sheep farming. At the age of 17 he purchased a run in thi» Upper AVaiau and had a highly successful farming career up to his retirement: in 1913. He recently published an. "Autobiography of an Early Settler, in New Zealand." Mr. Jones was high-: ly respected throughout South Canterbury. He is survived by his widow and six children, all resident in Canterbury with the exception of Mrs. Malcolm' Miller, of Wellington.'
