TAXI-CAB STRIKE
BLACK AND WHITE MEN
OWNER-DRIVERS' COMPLAINTS
CONDITIONS OF WORK
As a result of failure to negotiate a reasonable settlement in regard to hours of work and general conditions with the management of Black and White Cabs, Ltd., tlireo representatives of the men stated today that tho owner-drivers of tho company had decided to strike as from 2 o'clock this afternoon. It was.stated that the employees of other taxi-cab companies had agreed to stand by the Black and White owner-drivers to the extent that they would not accept any work from the Black and White Company.
"We feel," said one of the three men to a "Post" representative, "that no'man can reasonably work 16 to 18 hours a day and retain his health for any period. It; should be clearly understood, that we men own our cars and pay the company to find us work. Actually the company has adopted'the course of telling us when and how we have got to work, etc. The interests of tho men in tho other companies are not altogether the same as .ours, bocause they, enjoy the conditions we are seeking."
,It was stated that tho Black and White owner-drivers desired to be able to employ drivers to ~drivo their cars for part of the day, aud-thercby afford them some relief, as could bo done by other companies. This v privilege, however, had been refused. Moreover, the management of the company had persisted in putting on extra cars, and tho company would not give tho men an undertaking as to the number of cars they were sending out. The result of this was that it made it more difficult to earn a living. The . men were working 16 hours,a day, and then were not getting a living out of it.
Another point, niado by ■ the men was. that there was insufficient stand accommodation. The company also had the Tight to give its men twenty-four hours' notice of dismissal without giving a reason, and from the ownerdrivers', point of view the agreement entered into with, the : company was very one-sided. , . :
