FIFTY YEARS AGO

The Shaw, Savill Company's chartered barque Oxford, i 1281 tons, arrived in Wellington fifty years ago from London, under ithe command b£ Captain Braddick. She left London on January 20, 1883, with 302 Government immigrants on board, and was dismasted shortly afterwards ,in the Bay. of Biscay. After drifting for four days shewas picked up by. the paddlesteamer Troutbeok and towed to Cardiff for repairs. Soon , after, typhoid fever broke out and nine persons died. An inquiry into the outbreak of fever was held, and it was, pr'dved' that it was due to bad water carried on board. On April-26 the Oxford made another start under another captain (Captain Seymour), with 325 persons on board, and arrived in Wellington after a trip of eighty-eight days.
