A WIN FOR HOSPITAL
Though they fought gamely Lower Hutt were outclassed by the Heavier and more experienced Hospital cloven at Porirua last Saturday, suffering defeat by 5 goals to 1. Hospital suited themselves better than Hutt did to tho continual rain and the very heavy ground and ball, and were not extended to win.
. Ell, in goal for Hospital, was not sit home in the mud. He fumbled the ball on two or three occasions, which is unusual for him, and it was only very good luck that prevented a goal from one of these mistal*s.
Miles and Thompson worked hard and well in tho full-back positions, and Briggs, Trewick, aoid Simon formed a well-balanced' half-line. Marshall and Jcffery were the two best men in the forward line, and they received good support from Gibb, who played a skilful though inconspicuous game, and from Stanbridge whose never-failing energy made up for his weakness of ball control. On the left wing Windlej; made for himself manyj golden op-
portunities, but invariably'after a good solo run, he would fail miserably in Mi final shot.
The Lower Hutt. goalkeeper, Batchelor, was, with Nicolle," tho best of the eleven. He stood up remarkably well to the difficult conditions, and brought off some amazing saves.1 In front of him L. Gardner and J. Butland maintained a solid defence, the former, by; his tenacity and lids brain work, showing himself to be Bliglitly the better player of tho two.
Tho -weakness in the Hutt team lay in the halves, whore Campbell, ■ MacDbugan, and G. Stobbs did duty. Individually" they wore without fault, but as a line they failed to co-operate effectively with their forwards and backs. Nicolle was tho mainstay of.the forwards, and his many swift incursions into enemy territory gave the Hospital defence a lot' of trouble. If Iris inside men were as able as he was Hutt would have done much better. From the Other wing McGvath sent in dozens of good centres and corner kicks, and proved himself to b© a trier all the way. Crdsa and A. Stobbs woro by no means "passengers,"'but Jessup at insida loft nullified the effect of Ms otherwise good play by too frequently' wandering out of position. ' ' '..''*'
