FLYING THRILLS

EVENTS AT RONGOTAI

An exhibition of. crazy flying by FlightLieutenant G. B. Bolt thrilled spectator* at the Wellington Aero Club's .aviation display on Saturday afternoon. FlightLieutenant Bolt's remarkable control over his aeroplane enabled him to skim along the ground, first on one wheel and then on the other with the wing-tip almost brushing-the ground. The machine would then rise suddenly in a climbing turn and afterwards swoop down to carry out soma other delicate manoeuvre. Flight-Lieu-tenant Bolt's flying exhibitions are always a popular feature of the Wellington. Aero Club's displays, but on Saturday his performance was even more daring than usual. Squadron-Leader G. L. Stedman and Mr. C. C. Waite provided a bombing display and achieved a direct hit on • the target. Mr. Waite also performed aerobatics, and later flew the club's glider. Another interesting feature of the. display was a mock air fight between Mr. M. K. Archibald and Mr. Waite. The display was witnessed by a large number of spectators. A fair number paid for admission to the aerodrome,. but the majority preferred to enjoy a free show from their cars, which were parked in the vicinity of the aerodrome. At one time there were approximately 100 cars parked around the aerodrome boundaries. Of those who paid for admission many took advantage of the opportunity to make a trip over the city in the club's cabin aeroplane. ' During the afternoon competitions wer« held for landing and formation flying. The following lveer the results:— Landing Competition.—A pilots: W. Burgess, 1; G. H. Dunford, 2. Formation Flying.—S. R. Meatchem, K. Brownjohn. and K. G. Smith, 1; C. C. Waite, A. W. Xisbet, and H. Gardiner,' 2.
