NAPIER, June 4,

In a bright exhibition which had an exciting end, Hawke's Bay defeated Wairarapa at Rugby by 17 to 14. Within five minutes of the commencement Hawke's Bay scored from a combined movement initiated by Bradley and finished by Collett, Sherriffs converting. Sherriffs a few minutes later kicked a penalty goal. The visitors then livened up, and' for a long period had the home side- busily defending, but Hawke's Bay added another score from an open movement in which the ball passed through six pairs of hands, Clothier scoring. The kick failed. Two minutes later another score resulted from. Bradley and Russell participating in a movement which allowed Bradley to score. The kick again failed. Halftime came immediately, with the score: Hawke's Bay 14, Wairarapa nil. With a big. margin against them, Wairarapa opened the second spell more aggresssively, but their efforts were successful only in keeping the home side out of their twenty-five, with occasional sorties into Hawke's Bay territory. About a quarter of an hour after the interval McKay raised the flags for Wairarapa when he kicked a good penalty. Immediately afterwards Stringfellow scored an unconverted try, a bright movement. The visitors continued to do better, and followed this up with another try under the posts, from loose play. Reid scoring, and McKay converting. Soon after Wairarapa evened the scoring account as a result of an unconverted try by McKay., The game was not over yet, and Hawke's Bay scored from a penalty kick by Sherriffs just before time, the final score being: Hawke's Bay 17, Wairarapa 14.
