WELLINGTON SUCCESSFUL

After a run of losses since their fine showing against Athletic in the first of this season's series of championship matches, Wellington were successful against Marist in the early game at Athletic Park. They won, as reported briefly in Saturday's "Post," by 25 points to 19. Faulty handling and a multiplicity of infringements against the rules, upon which the referee (Mr. C. H. Jenkins) came down unfailingly every time, made much of the play rather patchy, but the. game was not altogether colourless. There were, for instance, some attacking movements by the backs, two in particular by the Marist back division, which were sparkling efforts. The teams were:— Marist.—Hepburn; Eville, Langdon, L. McGreevy; Cuming, Robins; Frost; O'Connor, Butler, George, Roach, Clarke, Gill, Ottaway, McHardy. Wellington.—Creswell; Ball, Diack, Pryde; Page, Blyth; Kilby; McLean, Rathgen, Fell, Thornton, Howatson, R. S. Smith, Hingston, Robson. An improvement on some of their recent displays was shown by the Wellington forwards, with the result that the backs were given better opportunities to open out. Marist, however, presented a solid front to most of their efforts in this direction, the tackling by the Marist backs being generally very sound. Marist were unfortunate. They lost the services of Roach in the first spell, and for the remainder of the game played a man short in the forwards. Even so; the team made a. strong bid to win, and at one stage towards the finish they were only one point behind Wellington. Goal-kicking played an important part in the scoring by both sides, Diack, for Wellington, and Hepburn, for Marist, showing good form in this department. Thornton (2), Fell, and Blyth scored tries for Wellington. Diack converted two of the tries and kicked three penalty goals. For Marist, Cuming and Eville scored tries, both being converted by Hepburn, who also kicked three penalty goals.
