UNPROMISING FORECAST

, The weather is still likely to be dull, and misty, with rain in the eastern and northern districts, and further heavy falls in tho North Island, according to the forecast issued at noon today. Light to fresh east to northeast winds are expected from Greymouth and Banks Peninsula southwards, elsewhere from south 'to south-east, reaching 'gale force in places, especially in the Cook Strait area. Under the influence of a cyclone in the north, conditions during the past twenty-four hours have been cold and unsettled, with strong ■ and squally south-easterly winds prevailing. Rain has fallen over most of th© North Island, wad has been heavy in tho Gisbornc area. Light scattered rain, has also been, reported on. tho v east coast of the South Island, but over most of that Island no rain has fallen. Gisborne had as much as 5.63 in., Tho cyclone is now centred off East Cape, but pressuro is also still low over the Tasman Sea. At Auckland a fresh southerly wind prevailed. yesterday, and the weather was dull and misty., Bain fell in tho early morning and again in the late afternoon and during- last night. Wellington experienced a cold, wet, wintry day, with a strong, squally south-easterly wind. The total rainfall was 38 points, and Lower Hutt had 46 points. : ' It was a dull, misty, cold day at Christchurch, with a southerly breeze blowing. One point of rain^fcll there. The weather was dull and unsettled in Dunedin, with drizzling rain at times. A light north-easterly wind prevailed.
