OBITUARY
MRS. ANN HARDHAM
On May 2-t there passed away at her residence, Moir Street, a very interesting and rnuch:loved resident, Mrs. Ann Hardham, widow of the late Mr. George lianlbam. Mrs. Hardham was born at Chichcstcr, Sussex, in 1851. Her marriage took placd at Waterloo' Ville in 1871, and two years later she and her husband left by the ship Douglas, 1428 tons, for New Zealand, which was reached after a long and stormy voyage, with, much sickness on. board, necessitating quarantine on Somes Island,, for all the passengers, who were compelled to improvise their own camp ovens and fireplaces. On their relea so from quarantine Mr. and Mrs. Hardham, with other hardy pioneers, found, on landing that, there were no houses available, so took temporary accommodation at the old Mt. Cook barracks, until a two-roomed twostoreyed house was found- iv Quin Street (now Sturdee Street), which they had to share with.another family of shipmates. The "stairway" was an outside ladder. Of Mrs. Hardham's family of eleven, .four survive her. They arc Mrs; A. .Kennedy (Karori), Mrs. H. Hall (I'etone), Mr. A. Hardham (Paraparaumu), and Mr. H. A. Hardham .(Wellington). Mrs. Hardham also leaves thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. The late Mrs.' Hardliani was tho mother of New Zealand's first V.C. hero, tho late Major William James Hardham, who won his distinction iv tho South African campaign, and also saw service- at.Gallipoli and iv Palestine.
