MAORIS' DOGS
TAXATION PROBLEM
(By Telegraph.) . (Special to the "Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, May 26. The question of the liability of Maoris to pay dog tax was again before tho Piako County Council at its meeting today. A Maori had pleaded exemption under the Treaty of Waitangi. The clerk stated that the collector had again called on the Maori, who had resisted payment. On being informed of the correct legal position, the Maori had invited the collector to have a look round for unregistered dogs. Unlike previous occasions, when he had seen many dogs, the collector could not find any unregistered animals. The clerk said it now remained for the council to decide whether it would proceed according to the first information received. Mr. Kennedy said it was most difficult to pin liability on to a Maori as far as the ownership of a dog was concerned. He cited instances of Maoris accepting the responsibility for animals owned by their relations. It was a hopeless job to find the correct owner. The council decided to leave the matjter to the collector's discretion.
