RADIO AND BETTING

AUSTRALIAN RESTRICTIONS

(From "Vedete.") SYDNEY, May 10. The campaign against S.P. betting and broadcasting of odds is being prosecuted with vigour to the general satisfaction of the raciug authorities. Naturally the move is not generally popular, aud there has been something, of on outcry since the Australian Broadcasting Commission last weekend delayed betting intelligence until the evening session. This decision was arrived at after ai representatve of the A.B.C. had conferred with the A.J.C. committee. ■ ■ ■ >■ The people moat concerned at present are the members.of the United Licensed Victuallers' Association, whose hotels are receiving" an -abundance of publicity. .It is alleged that, on Saturday*! particularly, the hotels offer every facility for illicit betting, with wireless broadcasts and S.P. agents present or easily accessible by telephone. The association counters by saying that all news would be received without the wireleM. At present the position is farcical, for whereas the A claes stations censored the racing service during the afternoon, the B class stations carried on with the full programme of: starters, post positions, jockeys, running, and every other particular. ■ . . It is reported that unless the B claps stations come into line, the Government will approach the Federal authorities to apply pressure.
