GOOD WINTER HORSE

LITTLE DOUBT IN FORM

(Special from "Limited.") HAWERA, May 20. After a let-up during last week's racing, Hawcra-traincd horses are being brushed up again in view of the Otaki and Great Northern Meetings. Little Doubt, who because of slight soreness was not taken to Wanganui, is working solidly again and yesterday created rather a surprise by defeating Cart ex in a gallop over a mile. Little notice could be attached to the effort, as the gallop was very badly rated under the conditions, which were very heavy. Little Doubt is a good horse in heavy going and it will be remembered that he ran third to Sunny Sky and Protomint in l;ist year's Cornwall Handicap. Although he claims au engagement in the big llat handicap ugain this year he is more likely to be seen out at the Otaki Meeting. Hawera trainers were successful at Wangaoui, Oney Cox scoring a win and place with Davistock, J. Fryer two places with Attentive, aad G. Richards a win with The Tiger. At Te Rapa Gibraltar was also successful for Fryer. W. Pine's mayes', La Crown and Tentcall, performed disappointingly at Wanganui and arc unlikely to take on the Otaki Meeting. Since returning from Wanganui Tenteall has been schooled over the small hurdles, giving ■ good exhibitions for a novice. Awaken, who has greatly disappointed this season, has been thrown out of traiuing for the present' and was left at her owner's place on the way back from Wanganui. Gibraltar, who has lately been racing much better than he performs on the track and has really surprised his critics by his excellent running, is to go on to Ellerslie, where he will be ridden by G. Duncan in the Cornwall Handicap. Since being placed under Fryer's cave Gibraltar has done well, and his popular owner, Mr. J. McLeod, should now bo on the right side Of the ledger with tho big son of Lackham, who sure looks capable of rising to better things yet. ATTENTIVE IMPROVES. Attentive, who, after running attractively at Opunake in March, went oft' colour, sparkled up just before Wangairji and was confidently expected to run good tuccis—which he did, paying a good .priou for third each day.. Fryer is a great believer of trying his own horses over the sticks, and Attentive is the latest to undergo Kome (schooling. On Monday he was popped over a couple of fences and shaped satisfactorily. The Chief Ruler—Lady Pat two-year-old, No Doubt, half-brother to Little Doubt, has again been taken up by J, Brown. The youngster, who since being gelded has been running out at his owner's place at Eltham. js looking extremely well and has evident^* been well cared for. He will be one of Hawera's interesting threo* year-olds. R. Brongh was unlucky with Instalment, being unable to take him to Wanpiliui as a result of his striking himself. He looked like winninj? a hack event at either Wanganui or Otaki, and his injury may now preclude him from starting either day at the latter fixture. Hawera's Great Northern Steeples candidate, C'opey, has been doiiy plenty of solid exercise, and Fryer can be depended on to have him in tip-top order for his attempt to win his second big Ellerslie steeples. The Tiser looks all the better for his race at Wangaaui, and will be seen out next at Otaki'. . . " LATEST TRACK TRIALS. An unusually heavy fog hung: over the Hawera course yesterday morning, interfering considerably with training operations. The outside of the course proper was used for galloping. The Cornwall Handicap candidate, Car* fox, who on Tuesday gave rather a disappointing work-out, (showed to much better advantage in beating Chief Line very comfortably over seven furlongs in Imin oOscc. The Tiger went comfortably over six

I furlongs in lmin "2Ssec. Little " Doubt j sprinted half a mile, but the fog prevented Ill's being timed with any accuracy. Tentcall, Tenacre,' Oriel, and Grey Papa worked solidly on the eand. The re- J mainder of the horses were given routine exorcise work on the inside tracks. I Diagauo, who looks an improved horse with his racing, was out doing light work.
