SECOND DIVISION
• Upper Hutt backs showed improved form against Mclrose-Selwyn. A reshuffling put Grecnbank from five-eighths to half, and Wallington from full-back to five-eighths. Both these players gave very good exhibitions. ' McLaughlin, at centre for Upper Hutt, was the best back on the ground in the match with Melrose-Selwyn. He did some great saving. A spectacular feature of the match between Berhampore and Johnsonville was a passing' rush by the Johnsonville forwards.- Bowler, Cathgart, Hallewell, and Smith passed the ball like a good set of backs, and the rush resulted in the lastnamed player scoring close to the posts. One of the most outstanding forwards on the field during the Johnsonville-Ber-hampore match was the Johnsonville player Bowler. He was "on" the ball from start to finish and seems to be the makings of a first-class-footballer. Lochore is undoubtedly a sound full back, but Miramar are inclined to rely on him too much in defensive play. His penalty kick on Saturday, his conversion of Miramar's try, and his line kicking (one specimen of which rather effectively eliminated a line umpire), were as accurate as ever. He was guilty, however, of some serious errors of judgment in his clearing tactics, preferring to run through rather than kick on defence. The Miramar backs showed great improvement on Saturday, and Parfitt and Thompson did much valuable work. Dawson on several occasions spoiled the action of the line by either keeping the ball too long or by. passing erratically..
