FIXING THE "LIMIT."

Some discussion took place iii the New Plymouth Supreme Court on Thursday afternoon, in the course of the hearing of a charge of alleged bookmaking, as to the fixing of the- limit of the dividend to be paid put. Detective Meiklojohiv had given evidence, from certified copies of Taco books, of the amount of dividends paid by winning horses in certain races, and was telling the Court that on race cards found in the possession, of the accused the amount of the limit was written in pencil against the race. Asked by Mr. Justice Reed when the limit was fixed, and who fixed it, the witness said it was fixed by what was known as the Bookmakers' Association. The Crown Prosecutor suggested (says the "Tarannki Herald") that tho better class of bookmakers would fix the limit before the races commenced.
