BEEF EXPORT

SUCCESSFUL SHIPMENT

BORTHWICKS PLEASED

(Special to the "Evening Post.") MASTERTON, This Day. "The experts at Home appeared to be practically unanimous as to the excellent eating qualities of the moat,", stated Mr. P. J. Borthwick, a director of Messrs. T. Borthwick and Sons, Ltd., yesterday, when, discussing a report from Home concerning the experimental shipment of chilled beef made by tho firm from its Waingawa works last February. "The encouraging tone of the report," added Mr. Borthwick, "confirms our previous decision to carry out further shipments of Nc,\v Zealand, chilled beef:" The report, said Mr. Borthwick, stated- that the shipment had been interesting as an experiment, and the results were sufficiently encouraging to warrant perseverance. The butchering was very good, but.not quite up to the Argentine standard. The quality of the meat was good and none of the quarters were condemned. Some, however, required slight trimming. The eating quality of thomeat was the subject of very favourable comment by experts, and had been termed "very excellent." Complimentary reference was also made concerning the shipping arrangements, which were considered first class. "The shipment was not a commercial success in that we lost money over it," added Mr. Borthwick, "but as it was made purely as an experiment that was to some extent' to be expected.'? Finance apart, however, tho shipment had been a success, and they had learnt a great deal from the experiment. It was the intention of the .firm to make further shipments, and from the results of those considerable additional information'would bo obtained. It would also then 1 be possible tb make comparisons, which, was very necessary. Mr. Borthwick considered that the reference to the excellent eating qualities of the beef was extremely satisfactory, and combined with the smoothness of the shipping arrangement?,-repaid the firm for its efforts as well as assuring that further shipments would be made. The bettf,.said Mr. Borthwick, was distributed right throughout England, and everywhere ,it met with a favourable reception, a fact that bears out tho previously expressed contention that there is a demand and a market I'ot New Zealand chilled beef at Home.
