CORRESPONDENCE

THE HOUSING POSITION

(To the Editor.) Sir,—-To my sorrow I know that your' article about housing in Monday's "Post" is quite true. My experience may be similar to others in search of a house to rent. ' I call twice a week sometimes ■on the E agents, and they cannot help me.- I am paying 35s a week and have a boarder t£> help us out. I cannot pay out of my hus- s band's wages 35s a week .for rent. I can- , not got a house for much less, and even then would have to go on. a hill. I have never known such a state of things before, and it is a shame that tradesmen are still out of work,, with ample money' in the banks, and material available for build- ( ing; What are our statesmen doing I j know a friend of mine who occupies part , of a house, and all together there are five different sets o£ people in the house, a J total of sixteen persons, including children. There is only one bathroom, and a tin bath at that. Each marr in that house has to live near town owing to his work. •The -section is about 27ft frontage, and i there is just room to hang a few clothes, ■ at the back. Obviously any'disease or < influenza spreads like wilcifire. amongst the < children and adults. It is shocking.the i wretched conditions under which many ■ are compelled to liVe. Children in many ' cases have no chance for play or healthy exercise. You have* done a great service in telling the truth about'housing.in Wellington. Instead of arguing about ] registering owners of fowls, why did not the Government tackle more important and'urgent matters, things that affect the health and future of mothers and children?—l am, etc..
