UNFAVOURABLE FORECAST

As depression and cyclones and areas of low pressure figure largely in the present meteorological situation, the weather forecast issued' at noon today ia the reverse of favourable. Southeasterly winds will prevail north of Westport and Kaikoura, with eastei'lies to north-easterlies, thence southward. Wind force will be moderate to strong .generally, gales occurring "in places' in and north of Cook Strait. The weather will tie cloudy,to overcast, with much mist, and in places fog. Rain is probable in most districts, especially, in eastern and northern parts of the country. ' In the North'lsland some heavy falls may*- be expected. Temperatures will be cool. ' The cyelonc,'".one of several disturbances in the offing,- which was .very shallow while crossing the northern part of the Tasman Sea yesterday, increased rapidly in intensity when it moved on to the northern part of New Zealand last night. Consequently wiads. from the south-west have freshened' and temperatures have fallen. Yesterday's weather was generally mild and dull, with very, little wind, but last night south-easterly winds freshened, and there was much rain, particularly in northern and eastern parts of the North Island, while scattered gales occurred oh tho East Coast of' the South Island. ,■ Aucldaud's weather yesterday -was dull with a light easterly wind. Bain fell there last night, and at 9 a.m. today it was still raining. > Wellington had a calm, mild, and dull day,- with fog at times. During the late evening, however, a south-eas-terly wind sprang ,up and gradually increased in strength, and the weather this morning had become cold, damp, and unpleasant. The weather in Christc'hurch yesterday was mostly dull, although there was some sunshine during the afternoon. A south-westerly wind sprang up after noon, and the evening was foggy.' , Dunediu's weather yesterday was mostly cloudy' and calm. Since last night, however, rain has begun to full.
