MOUNTING DEBTS
THE FARMERS' BURDEN
THREAT TO PRODUCTION
(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.") DUNEDIN, This Day. The Ottigo provincial Council of the Farmers' Union in its annual report says:— "It is no exaggeration to say that many farmers are becoming disheartened at tho steady accumulation of indebtedness, and' seeing no hope ahead have neither the. heart, will, nor cash to keop up production. A definite attempt should be made to bring capital indebtedness of the farmers into relation with facts as they exist today, and a national scheme devised to make equitable adjustment of mortgage and other capital debts so that the mortgagor may have a reasonable opportunity of " discharging them by • industry and thrift over a, reasonable period. If relief does not come quickly either in the shape of' increased prices or decreased charges, 50 per cent, of our farmers will cease producing through sheer inability to cany on."
