DRIVERS' DISPUTE

CONCILIATION SITTING

Proposals and counter-proposals for a new Wellington motor and horse drivers' award were heard by a Conciliation Council today. Mr. E. W. 1\ Gohns presided.

The application for a new award was ma do by the union, which was represented by the following assessors: Messrs. W. Eagle, C. Edwards, and C. Monkley, with Mr. A. Parlane as agent. The assessors for. the employers were Messrs. J. J. Blyth, J.'Munt, and Barton Ginger, with Mr. "W. J. Mountioy as agent.

The union's claims in regard to hours ot work and wages were substantially the same as in. the old award. > Good progress was made this morning, and a number of clauses were agreed to, including that relating to a forty-eight-hour week. The employers' proposal for a day of nino and a half ordinary hours was hold over in the meantime. It was agreed that no worker should bo required to work continuously for more than five hours without a meal interval.

The question of wages was discussed at length. Mr. Parlanc intimated that it would probably bo acceptable to the union to fix the rates midway between the employers' offer and the old rate, less 10 per cent. The matter was deferred for consideration during the luncheon adjournment.
