UNUSUAL HEAT

81.3DEG. THIS'MORNING

HIGHEST SINCE 1927

To those who found the return to work this morning decidedly unwelcome owing to the sweltering heat, it may be of some satisfaction to learn*that the temperature in the shade at 11.30 o'clock this morning was the highest recorded in Wellington since 1927. The thermometer, which may have risen higher later in the day, recorded 81.3deg at the Kelburn Observatory. The weather conditions locally were somewhat peculiar yesterday, in that although parts of the city experienced blazing sunshine, others were quite cool owing to a thick fog which came up on Saturday night and enveloped the entrance to the harbour and spread along the -eastern bays. At Kelburn, Northland, and Karori the heat was too great to be comfortable, the sun blazing down from a clear sky, but at regular intervals the sound of the foghorn at Pencarrow, issuing its warning to shipping, could be heard.

The maximum temperature at Kelburn yesterday was 79.2deg, which was the highest registered since 1928. , There were 9.6 hours of sunshine recorded at the Observatosy on Saturday and 9 hours yesterday.
