THE BOYS' BAND
! (To the Editor.) Sir, —The treatment accorded the Young Australia League boys by the City Council would be humorous were it not so unreasonable. What possible harm would be caused by their marching through the streets with, their band is beyond me altogether. The City Council has made Wellington the' laughing, stock of New Zealand. To be consistent the Salvation Army should be denied permission to march or play,, also no troops or procession should be allowed on Anzac.Bay.or Armistice Day or the opening', of Parliament, etc. The whole thing is humbug. The impression the boys will carry-away, of the oft boasted hospitality of the-.city of Wellington will be the reverse of favourable, for which we will have to thank*the City. Council.—l am, etc., INDIGNANT .CITIZEN. (To the Editor.) Sir,—There must ,be thousands o£ citizens in Wellington wondering in amazement at the decision of our city .'councillors in refusing permission for the Young Australia League Boys' Band to marcU through the city. We have yet to learn from our Mayor why thia ban was placed on this fine body of well behaved youths and their three senior leaders. Did our city councillors think that they were deal- ' ing with a desperate gang of bushranger* or something of the sort? . If, as the city councillors say, no bands are allowed to. march through the city, let them be consistent, and treat all bands alike.' How was it that a band was allowed to march through the city on New Year's Eve to the Basin Reserve rand two processions allowed to march at Carnival Week. Why not stop the Salvation Army? —Not tli<tt, I advocate this. The Young Australia League boys .will have the unique, distinction of returning to, Aus,tralia and telling their fathers and mothers that they absolutely frightened the Wellington city councillors to such an extent that they refused them permission to march through their city 'for fear that they took charge of it;—l am.etc., A.
