PARKHOUSE WINS SINGLES

PAIES GREEN WINNERS

' Those who attended at the Wellington Club's ■ greens yesterday afternoon saw some fine bowling in the semi-finals and final of the singles championship. As is often the case, play in the final did not equal the bowling earlier in the singles, but nevertheless the contest was exciting. Numerous guests, including many ladies, visited the greens for afternoon tea, during which music was provided by an orchestra. The games resulted:—— SEMI-FINALS. Edwards—Parkhouse. T. Edwards (Temuka) met W. Parkhouse (Wellington). The umpire was Mr. W. Beisley (East Fremantle, West Australia), who is taking part in the tournament* Edwards won the toss and threw the kitty. Edwards was too fast m the first head with his first, ;but his second bowl gained first place. Edwards's Eecond made him 2 up, but Parkhouse trailed the jack nicely to gain two shots. Parkhouse was very short with his first bowl on the next head. Edwards was well over. Parkhouse gained first place a foot jack high. Edwards got a toucher lOiri jack high. Parkhouse we nt through. Edwards put in another fine shot 4in in front of the jack. Parkhouse with a beautiful bowl, 3in away, stood 3-nil. The third was^a wide head in which Edwards got two shots. .On the fourth head Ed-wards-lay a toucher 6in behind the jack. Parkhouse was 2ft away. Edwards got another toucher' which lay on tho jack. Parkhouse was" 2ft short. Parkhouse was too fast with two bowls, and Edwards was now in front, 4-3. Parkhouse' beat Edwards for first place'on the .fifth head, but Edwards replied with a toucher which stopped close to the jack. He followed this with a policy bowl at the back. Edwards got another close one, making him 2 up. Parkhouse got one out with a good drive.' Edwards, playing with, great judgment, was varying the length of bis heads.. The sixth head was a short one. Edwards drew near the jack and then put a good one at the. back. Edwards trailed beautifully on to the jack, and lay 2. Edwards put in the best back bowl. Parkhouse went through, and'the score was Edwards 6, Parkhouse 3. Edwards put a beautiful shot on the jack on the seventh head. He was short with' his second bow], which Parkhouse knocked up to give Edwards two shots. Parkhouse's drive to disturb the head failed. Edwards put in a, fine block. Parkhouse's best bowl was wide, and the ' score stood: Edwards 8, Parkhouse 3, ~on the eighth head Edwards was 3ft behind. Parkhouse was also well behind; Edwards got a toucher, but Parkhouse still lay the shot. .Parkbouse then drew a toucher Bip away, and lay 2 up. Edwards got second place. Edwards, with a masterly shot got a toucher. 3in from the jack. Parkhouse was a foot away with his last bowl. Edwards 9-3. Edwards's first bowl on the ninth head was too fast. Parkhouse was narrow and short, and Edwards's second bowl was more so. Parkhouse lay the shot 3ft behind, but Edwards beat it, a foot off the jack in front. Parkhouse's bowl got inside, and scored nrst place. Edwards'g next bowl, a toucher, made it a measure for shot. Parkhouse secured the verdict, and scored a point. Parkhouse, was too far with his first on the tenth- head,; and Edwards got first place 6m behind the jack, and laid another alongside, bowling superbly. Parkhouse got far behind. Edwards endeavoured to get behind, but was slightly slow. Parkhouse drove well, and went with kitty into the ditch, securing 3 shots. Edwards's bowl fell into the ditch. Edwards 9-7. On the eleventh head Parkhouse lay 2ft from the jack,- with Edwards a good second. Parkhouse gained another fchot. Edwards was short. Parkhouse was somewhat short, but lay another shot. •Edwards tried to-pick np^-tbe jack; bat went too wide. Parkhouso scoring 2 was tor the first time in front, 10-9. On the twelfth head Parkhouse'i, first bowl was 2ft behind, Edwards's fine bowl was Sin from the jock, Parkhouse uas too fast with his second bowl, Edwards put his lying shot closer and lay 2. Parkhousre was, too narrow. Edwards drew another and Jay 3. Parkhouse was too heavy and Edwards got the full four, all fine shots, and stool 13-10. On the sixteenth head Edwards stood 15-14, and he scored a point on the next. Parkbouse got 1 on the, eighteenth. On a measure on the nineteenth head Parkhouse secured the verdict—l 6 all. Edwards added a point on the twentieth head. This close game had by now attracted general attention. Parkhouse killed the twenty-first head, when Edwards was lying a beautiful shot. On the leplay Edwards was wide and fast. Parkhouse lay a foot -in front at the side. Edwards was too narrow. Parkbouse drew another, then Edwards got second place. Parkhouse next got a touchei- and lay 2'at a difficult angle to distiub, and Edwards's good try was a trifle narrow, Parkhouse winning, IS-17. Reid-McAffster. ■J. B. Reid- (Lyall.v.Bay): met T..T.; McAlister (Onehunga). Reid scored 3 on the first head, but his last bowl on.the fecond head failed to disturb a fine draw by McAlister. On the third head, McAlister drew a, fine shot, but Reid drew three beauties, and stood 6-1. On the fourth' head Eeid lay 2, when McAlister drew a toucher. Reid's drive took, out his own bowl, and McAlister laying a fine draw behind the jack brought his score to 3 to 6. On the fifth head McAlister pulled up another. Reid drew a fine shot..with his first bowl that was all but a toucher, andfollowed it np with another not a- foot away. McAlister drew twice, missing, and Reid, whose other bowls were lying handy,' scored two more; one oh a measure. With a lead' of J.O to 4 on the sixth head Reid seemed safe, but McAlister trailed the jack a foot on the next head, and drew another, making him 6-10. McAlister lay IS inches away with his first bowl on the eighth head. Rejd bettered it by 6.inches, and then McAlister lay with one not 6 inches from. the jack. Reid then trailed the jack and lay 2. McAHster drew a fine shot which knocked Reid away from the jack, but Reid still lay the shot, standing 11-6. Reid was drawing the better up to this point. Reid was lying 2 on the next_ head, when McAlister drove, putting the jack in the ditch near one of his back bowls, and he scored another point, 11-7. Reid was lying 2 when McAlister knocked him away and lay the shot, and came under it with his next bowl, standing 9 to 11 on the tenth head. On the twelfth head Reid's third bowl ■was a toucher, and with one a measure, he scored 2 points, standing 15-9; McAlister, however, scored a point on the next, and two ,more on the nest. Driving the jack- into 'the ditch on the fifteenth head, and following it there, McAlister.lay 1,: standing 14 to 15, and, scoring 1 on a measure on- the sixteenth; head, made the game 15 all. Interest now centred on this game. Reid drove twice, but failed to disturb : McAlister's two fine shots on the seventeenth, MeAlister taking the lead, 17-15. McAlister followed this up by. two beautiful drawn shots for 2 on the eighteenth head, making him 18-16, with three heads to go.' McAlister was lying well on the nineteenth bead when Reid got a toucher. McAlister just missed trailing the kitty. Reid played a fast shot and pasted the ball right into the head for a i, making the score even again, 18-19. Reid scored one on the next head with a toucher. With the score 20-19 against him, McAlister drew a toucher. Eeid knocked it away, and lay 2. Then McAHster, who had supreme confidence in his driving throughout tho tourney, drove, spreadcagling the head, and giving him plenty of room for two fine shots which he drew, to win 21-20. THE FINAL. Parkhouse-McAlister. Parkhouse led off with 3 in his match in the final with-McAlister. McAlister drew two nice shots on the next head. Pavkbouse got two shots on the next loose head. McAlister placed a beautiful toucher on the jack on the fourth head, and Parkhouse missed a drive. Parkhouse 5; McAlister 3. McAlister scored one on the next head, and made the game 5-all on the fifth head with his second bowl, 6 inches from the jack, which was not disturbed. Park'

On the'sixteenth head Parkhouse drew 1 shot, making him 12-11, and he drew the shot on the seventeenth head with his last bowl, where he was found to have scored 3, making him 15-11. McAHster drove, and secured a point on the next head. On the nineteenth head Parkhouse drew the shot, but McAlister beat him, and was not disturbed. On. the twentieth head Parkhouse with his second bowl lay a foot behind the jack. McAHster beat it by some 3 inches.: Parkhouse ■ then trailed the jack and.lay the shot. McAlister drove and missed. Parkhouse, with.his last bowl, drew another fine shot, and stood 17-13. On the twenty-first head Parkhouse with his first bowl drew a beautiful shot, .8 inches behind, the jack. McAlister's bowl nearly trailed the jack; but slipped through. Parkhouse put a policy bowl at the back. McAlister's next was short; Parkhouse with a back- . hand shot came round to protect the , back. McAlister made an attempt to trail , the jack for 3, and scored two shots,, pro- . viding the most exciting head of the game. In 1931 he was lead to J. Porteous in the centre champion of champions winning pair. He skipped the club's champion, rink in 1930, and was third to J. Porteous's winning rink in 1931.
