CROQUET
N.Z. TOTJENAMMT
OPENED AT LOWER HUTT
The Dominion croquet tournament was opened at Lower Hutt and Petone this morning, the headquarters being the Waimarie Club's premises in Eiddiford Park. There are ten greens in use—five on Eiddiford, one on the Hutt Bowling 'Club's grounds adjoining the park, three on the Ngaroma Club's greens, and one at the Central Club, the two latter being adjoining grounds at Petone. The opening ceremony -was performed by the Dominion president, Mrs. Bhodes Williams, who welcomed the members of various clubs who are taking part. The Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. W. T. Strand) also welcomed the visitors,to the borough, and expressed the hope that croquet would always remain on a higher plane than those sports which had introduced professionalism into their ranks. The various, greens are in excellent order, and visitors were lavish in their praise of the excellence of the greens on Eiddiford Paik, which.are under the control of Mr. E. Hutt, superintendent of borough reserves. The Petone greens are also iv excellent order, and owing to the nature of the soil, are somewhat faster than the Hutt greens. At Lower Hutt, in addition to the Waimarie Club's rooms, the Borough Council has given the use of the- Plunket Booms, which are being used as tournament headquarters.
