Thus, in 1917, G. B. Osmond- (Auckland) was the ■winning skipper; inT1921, E. Jury (Karangahake); R. N. Pilkington (Hamilton) in 1925; and W Bremner (West End, Auckland) in 1929. Auckland bowlers are rather sanguine as to their representatives' chances of success in the present instance, as ten rinks, who include amongst them some first-class skippers, are ' taking part in the competition. Maxwell Walker "(last year's winner) has brought the same rink with'him (Keys, Maeky, and C. H. De Launay); and W. Bremner (West End), who has "held the' winning honour twice, viz., in 1924 and 1929, has a good combination in Faire, Needham, and C. E; Hardley. J. Kerr (Onehunga), H. A. Robertson . (Onehunga), and W. A. Lancaster (Carlton) are other well-known competitors with good records. The Eastbourne green (Section A) was in first-class order and played well for the opening round. As the day wore on the fast running surface and the north-west light- wind fully extended the players. ■ The skippers concerned were satisfied that there was no need to roll the green at the luncheon interval. There was much interesting play. The game between A. H. Beneiield (St. John's, Wanganui), tho 1927 winner, against A. K. Smart (New Plymouth), the runner-up skip in 1923, went strongly in Beneneld's favour. He was 11-2 on the seventh head. When 3 down, he carried the kitty into the ditch for one shot. On the thirteenth head Benefield, when. 2 dpwn, got first place with a light wick, making him 16-5. He" continued to score freely, finely supported by hig men—Glover, Rowling, Wight—and was 27-9 on. the nineteenth head, and finished up with 32-15. - . / Smart could not strike form; his lead (F. J. White) and third player (E. Dingle) played well. . J. Lawrie (Lyall Bay), who skipped the winning rink in the local centre's Christinas tourney, well backed up by Mclntosh, C. E. Ingram, and A. Raven, was too good for W. Bull (Levin). Lawrie had success with his five drives and drew to inches. He was 6-3 on the seventh head, 20-7 on the 16th, 23-8 on the 18th, and 31-15 on the last head. P. MeWhannell (Hataitai) won by 30-18 against 11. Wilson (Linwbod) The game was an eve,n one half-way, and at the tea adjournment McWhannoll was 10-12. On resuming the tide turned in his favour, and he got 4, 1, 1, 2, 5, 3, 1, 2, 1, while Wilson added only six to his score. C. Bennett, Moston, and Wellings played very consistently for the winner, who was also in excellent form.. Hutton, Gibson, Hardie, Lambert (Thorndon) had a closely-contested game against Kitchen, Garland, Hall, White (Hastings), and won with a 3 on the last head, 23-20. There were four ties, viz., 9-9, 18-18, 19-19, and 20-20 on the 24th head. Both-sides played well, and Lambert showed his quality as a skipper. Another very good game was that between Eyeritt, W. Hardley, Sykes, Harper (Ot'ahuhu), and Hart, Jenkins, Herron, J. Conder (Island Bay). There were no fewer than five ties in the game, viz., 3-all, 7-all, 8-all, 9-all, and 13-all. On the 20th head, Harper was 17-Id. He then got a5. Conder capped this with a similar score, and a. 1, but he was still 1 down (21-22). Harper kept ahead to win by 24-21. The report of yesterday's play in the semi-finals and final of the singles appears on page 13.
