COMPANY V: AOTRESS !
(Received 3rd January, 12;30 p.m.) . LOS ANGELES, 2nd January. A suit for nearly 200,000 dollars damages was filed in.the Federal Court here on Monday against Marlene Dietrich by Paramount Studios charging breach of contract. The grounds of action are that she refused to work under the terms of a 4000 dollars a week contract, and the Court is. asked that she be enjoined from working for another producer.;-. ' -
Emariuol Cohen, vice-president, .who is in charge ofrthe production, explaining the action, said that since the completion of her. last picture the actress was paid 400tf dollars a week on a contract expiring on 19th February. Plans had been made for another picture, and the production arrangements were complete. He said that the actress, arbitrarily refused to go ahead and now refused to face the cameras and requested cancellation of her contract for the few remaining weeks. -The/costs of the preparation of any picture were one of the greatest items, and cancellation of the contract now would mean that Paramount would not get -Marlene Dietrich for a picture for which it had already paid her. By reason, of her refusal, the company had been burdened by an accumulated loss of over 200,000 dollars.
