ELOCUTIONARY EVENING

An entertainment of plays, character sketches, and recitations was presented by Mr. Clement May and his students at the Concert' Chamber last;night. The programme wasa particularly varied one, and won the approval of the audience. Mr. May's ■ "Dickens Protean Act," in which _he depicted characters from Dickens novels, including Uriah Heep, Micawber, and Scrooge, was a well-studied performance. In the one-act play, "Could We But See," by A. Demain' Grange, Mr. May sustained the leading role capably, and he was assisted by Miss Evelyn Goldsmith and Messrs. Errol and.Cedric Muir. "A Miracle Play," by Philip Johnson, was presented by Misses Essie Gill, .Eileen Bass, Margaret Campbell,' and Joan Spencer. A sextet of children acquitted themselves "creditably. Their items were "Twice Times," Fay Steeds; "The Spade," Arnold Rosenbloom; "Alms in Autumn," Gay Steeds: "My Dog." Gerald Shapiro; "When I Keep School," Yvonne Smith; "Vespeis" (A. A. Milne), Fay Steeds, Gay Steeds, and Yvonne Smith; and ''The Ship of Eio" (Masefield), Jack Williams. Mr. Eobert Cheyne contributed "Sydney Carton's Farewell" from Diekcns's "Tale of Two Cities" and "The Difference/ and other items were "Scots, of the Eiverina," Miss Margaret Freeman; "It May Be Life," Miss Ella Cheyne; "Pierrot" (John Drinkwater).
