COAL CONFERENCE
BASIS OF DISCUSSION

WESTPOET, 18th July.
A coal conference opened at Westport to-day. ■ Those present were:— Messrs. Flavell (chairman), Hardie, Christie, Stitt, Hunter, J. C. Brown, G. Smith, MoGMe, and T. O. Bishop, representing the mine owners, and Messrs. Hay ward, Purdie, Evans, Smeatou, Barber, Coppersmith," Jack Cpnnell, and Hornsby, representing the miners. The • conference opened; at 2 p.m., and continued till 5 p.m.
In.' reply to • inquiries, the chairman stated that the old -agreement was taken; as a basis' of discussion^ and was considered clause by clause together with the amendments sought by both parties. - Nothing more could be said at present.'... 1 .:.■'- ;..a - . •:-
