DETAILS OF SCHEME
COST TO CANADA

The St. Laurence Seaway Treatjj was" signed on Monday by Mr. H. li,' Stim'son, Secretary of State, for tie United States,; and Mr.. Herridge, Canadian Minister, for Canada. :It\ calls for the development; of the" St. ■ > Lawrence for the 180 miles ] Montreal to Lake Ontario,; ai, eightyear task. It will enable ocean-going, vessels to travel to the heart of the American Continent, and provide up to two million horse power. It will cost 800 million dollars.
The net capital cost to .Canada, for the St. Lawrence 'project is 38,071,500, dollars. Canada gets credit for'previous expenditures, including those oa the Welland:Canal. The net .capital cost to Canada was brought down to 38 million dollars by the 67 millions paid by Ontario to the Dominion' on account of power work in. the international section. Canada; las been credited with the cost of the Welland Canal, 128 mUlions.
The total net cost to the United States is 243 millions.
The figures do not include the cost of installing power house machinery''or .equipment for the development of power, as this will be financed "independently, of the treaty.: in the case of Canada by Ontario. V ■ '■
