NEW ZEALAND ART

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—The letter of a New Zealand artist, in reply to a previous writer, I think hardly touches the point, inasmuch that it is not necessary to go much beyond walking distance of any of our cities to 6ee scenery well worth the artist's effort. No doubt, snobbishness, as mentioned, together with1 the leaning certain societies have towards the crude modernistic style of painting, is not very encouraging to landscape painters in this country. Nevertheless, the percentage of New Zealand works on exhibition as compared with foreign subjects is very marked. The effort of the original writer 'on this subject to instil some enthusiasm in New Zealand is highly commendable, and deserves encouragement.—l am, etc.j ' - , INTERESTED.
