"ON THE MOVE UP"

The most sober-minded are now willing to admit that there are signs of a lift in the depression. Great Britain's wonderful conversion operation has given new confidence in the strength, of the United Kingdom and her power to lead the world in recovery. This confidence is reflected in an improvement of wool and dairy produce prospects; and this improvement will; it is hoped; revive the spirits of New Zealand. With such a revival there should be a substantial measure of recovery, for here, as elsewhere, the depression has been deepened by lack of confidence. -.Though it may be a small sign, and not too definite, the rise in building figures betokens, the spread of new hope. Though we overbuilt in prosperous years there are yet works which are warranted now (particularly when costs are low) but which are held up because the future is uncertain. When the future can be discerned with greater certainty some of those works will be undertaken. Altogether the outlook reveals legs of that gloom which has been so disheartening. Mr. Forbes expressed the general feeling when he stated: "I feel that we are on the move up." As the Prime Minister said, people have to a certain extent got over the shock, of the sudden drop in prices. This hopeful note from a Prime Minister who has never sought to belittle, our difficulties, but has rather stated them bluntly, is one which may be accepted by the public with sober confidence.
