EMPIRE AFFAIRS

DATE OF CONFERENCE

THOMAS WANTS ALL THERE

(Received 18th November, 11 a.m.)

LONDON, 17th November. In tho House of Commons Mr. I. J. Albery (C.) asked which of the Dominions Mr. Thomas proposed to visit' before the Imperial Conference, when he would depart, and how long he would be absent.

Mr. Thomas said that the plans had not yet been definitely made. Mr. Albery: "Is inability to answer the question duo to the fact that it is intended to hold the Conference earlier?" ! Mr. Thomas: "No, Sir, the date has been arranged because it ensures the attendance of all tho Dominions. Nothing could be more fatal, in my judgment, than any Dominion being unable' to attend. It would be far better to fix a date for all than bo premature.',' BepJying to another questioner, he' said that a detailed estimate of the cost of tho trip had not boon made, but tho value of a general Empire agreement outweighed all considora^ tions of cost; Mr. Thomas, answering Labour members' questions, said that in view of the--cxisting depression migration to theDominions was not being encouraged.;. Assisted passago schemes were in aboy-| anco, apart from exceptional cases involving tho reunion of families. $•
