COMPLETE ROLLS
FOR COMING ELECTION
NEED FOR OVERHAUL
"I will have the matter looked into, as I believe we want as complete rolls as we can get," said the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes), in the House •of Representatives" yesterday, when replying to Opposition complaints that the electoral rolls in some districts needed overhauling.
It was stated by Mr. E. J. Howard (Labour, Christchurch South) that the rolls in Canterbury were in a bad state, and he asked the Prime Minister to give instructions to have the matter remedied. . ■ ■-•■■-
Mr. D. G. Sullivan (Labour, Avon) made inquiry as to the steps being taken to ensure that the election was fought on a clean and a complete roll. There were many districts, he felt sure, where changes had taken place and where nothing had been done to put the rolls right. ' ' ' „ •'. • According to Mr. J. M'Combs (Labour, Lyttelton) the Christchurch roll contained names of electors who had left the district.
The Prime Minister: "Not many people leave Christchurch; more come in." (Laughter.) Mr. M'Combs suggested that the postal authorities should be asked to ch.eck up the rolls and undertake the ;enrolt ments. There would be no extra cost to the State, as the sum would merely be transferred from one Department to another. . , The Prime Minister promised to have the question looked into.
