RECORD BREAKING ROUND

MISS O. KAY'S BRILLIANCE

ROTORUA, 13th October.

To-day^ was a day of successes for Miss O. Kay, Now Zealand woman golf champion. In addition to breaking the Rotorua course record of 73 by returning a 71, thus gaining the distinction of being the first woman player in New Zealand to reduce the scratch score, she also won the Donnelly Cup, a stroke handicap trophy, the .Mellsop Cup for the competitor returning the best aggregate scratch score over three rounds of stroke play, and a trophy for the best gross score returned in connection with the Donnelly Cup competition.

Playing a .flawless round, which included three birdies on tho return, Miss Kay returned a card which read as follows: — Out: 533463544—37 In: 543344434—34 71 She was a stroke under bogey at the third, tenth, fifteenth, and eighteenth, and only one over bogey at the first and ninth. Although Miss Kay put up one of the most outstanding performances in New Zealand golfing history, this was the first occasion her play was not followed by a large gallery, only three spec? tators witnessing the record round. She played without a mistake; her putting was particularly outstanding, and she obtained a remarkable length from the tees.

The weather conditions at present are ideal. The course is in first-class order, although the greens, as a result of- recent rain, are somewhat tricky.

The" provincial teams' match was played during the afternoon in conjunction with the Donnelly Cnp, and was won by Manawatu A, with a gross score of 336. The winning team consisted of Miss Gaisford, Mrs. E. Cooke (Castlecliff), Mrs. H. Collinson (Manawatu), and Mrs. Russell Grace (Wanganui). Mrs. Cooke returned the best gross score, 80, thus holding the Innes Cup for the .year.- Wellington A, with a gross score of 349, were funners-up.

With a score of 70 net, Miss Kay -won the Donnelly Cup, an eighteen holes stroke handicap trophy. The runnerup was Miss F. Rathbone (Auckland), 81-8-73. Mrs. K. S. Browne (Cambridge) 87-12-75, and Misb L. Dyer (Wellington),' 88-13-75, returned the best cards in the division players on 11 to 18 handicap. Mrs. Browne won the trophy in this division.

The Mellsop Cup, for the competitor returning the best aggregate scratch score in three rounds of stroke play was won by Miss Kay, with a gross score of 227. Mrs. Guy Williams (Masterton) was runner-up: with a gross score of 245.
