HERE AND THERE

A Clever Idea,

An original idea is being carried out by the United Mothers' Club, under the auspices of the Wellington Free Kindergarten Association. A competition is to be held, followed by an exhibition, the work to be done by the mothers and fathers of the children attending -the schools. The exhibits must be articles of everyday use, and made put of waste material. Prizes will be given for (a) The most original exhibit; (b) the exhibit costing the least; (c) the club wtih the largest number of exhibits in proportion to their kindergarten roll. The number of articles that may be entered by each person is not limited,,but no exhibitor can win more than one prize, and all exhibits are to become the property of the United Mothers' Club. The entries will close on 28th October, at 3 in the afternoon. The exhibition will be on the following day at.Taranaki street, when the articles may be purchased. ■

Assistance to Red Cross,

Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchell, of "Casa Loma," Melling, have made a kindly offer to the Red Cross, which should benefit the funds of the society materially. The gardens at "Casa Loma" (which means the House on the Hill) are very beautiful^ with part-bush and masses of lovely flowers, a pleasure for any garden-lover to visit, and the offer is that for several weeks the gardens will be open to any people who like to drive out and spend some time in viewing them. A small charge will be made for the privilege. On. Saturday afternoon a little opening ceremony will take place at 3 o'clock, when the Hon. Dr. Collins will speak briefly about the work of the Ked Cross. Simple afternoon tea will be served, and Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell hope that all friends of the Red Cross and anyone interested in gardens will make a point of attending on Saturday. The charge is very small, and a pleasant outing .is assured. Mrs. Mitchell is president of the Hutt branch of the Bed Cross Society.

Silverstream Women's Institute,

At the: meeting of. the Bilverstream Women's Institute, forty members were present, and Mrs; Young presided. A guessing name competition was won by Miss Elsie Clarke.. There was a beautiful display of flowers in the competition- for the; best arranged vase or bowl of flowers. Miss Barton, was the winner, with Miss Farrow second and: Mrs. Kitson third. Mrs. Kitson gave a demonstration on raffia work, and potatoes werb distributed to all who wished to enter for the potato shield. It was decided to send two delegates to the federation conference, on 15th October. The National Anthem brought a most interesting meeting to a : close.

Alexandra Home.

The matron of the; Alexandra Home reported at a recent meeting that there were 35 adults and 30 infants at present in the" home. During the month there had been 31 confinements, 2 district cases, and 147 attendances at the ante-natal clinic. The committee pointed out the need of a bookcase for the nurses in the home, and would be grateful for a new or a second-hand one. Five nurses who sat for the. State Maternity Examination in September all passed, one with honours. Mrs. Gill presidedat the meeting.

Invitations Issued. >

The president, and. committee of the Victoria Bowling Club have issued invitations for a social evening for members and lady friends, which will take place at the Oddfellows' Hall, Clyde quay. There will be a concert programme, supper, and dancing.

Cabaret at Porlroa.

A large number of dancers attended thL .opening night of the Riviera Cabaret at Porirua on Saturday ovening. The' decorations were carried out in rose and gold, and" the lounges and vestibule comfortably furnished. The official opening was perform d by Mr. Dunbar Sloane, and Madame Martini: was hostess. Those present were Miss Betty Sloane, Miss Wells, Mesdames Mexted, A. Wilson, E. Greer,, Bustard, Stone, J. Sinclair, T. Clapham, B. Mex-' ted, -Boardman, Turner, Sweetzer, and many others. . .
