SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.

The last of the recent long scries of Intense westerly disturbances passed to the east of the Dominion last night, and barometers have since risen everywhere, the rise having been an extremely rapid one In the far south. Strong westerly winds prevailed yesterday, with gale force in many places in and south of Cook Strait, but during the night a change to southwesterly set In. Gales were still blowing at 9 a.m. to-day on parts.of the east coast of the South Island, but the winds generally were moderating. Heavy showers have fallen in western districts and in Otago, with hail at places, and during last night some of the ranges in the latter district received a coating ot snow. lir the east coast districts the weather has been mostly fine and dry, but some showers fell last night on, the east coast of. the South Island with the southerly' change. Scattered showers were still reported this morning on the west coast, and at Nugget Point there were snow and hall showers, but generally conditions were rapidly improving.
