BOOKMAKING CONVICTION
MAGISTRATE AND CHIEF JUSTICE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHUBCH, This Day. A fine of £40 and costs was imposed on Jack Whitton (24), who pleaded guilty to-day to a charge of bookmaking. The police said that the accused had been betting at the ISfcw Brighton trots on Saturday. Tho Magistrate, Mr. E. D. Mosley, aaid: "The Chief Justice has made some remarks concerning the duties of Magistrates in thoso cases: However, one has one's own duties to carry out to the best of his ability, utterly regardless of what pooplo may think. If I were to allow myself to be unduly influenced by the Chief Justice I would send this man to gnol. I do not propose to do that. This man lias not been convicted before; lie has not'even been charged before, and is only in a small way of business." j
