CATHOLIC PLAYERS
WILL THEY AFFILIATE?
A TENNIS PROBLEM
The question of what steps were being taken to pevsuude members of the Wellington Federation of the New Zealand Catholic Lawn Tennis Association to affiliate with the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association was discussed at last evening's meeting of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association. hi reply to a question as to what was being done to induce the Catholic players to affiliate, the chairman (Mr. C. G. Swinburne) said that much had been done last year, but very little this yeav. The ques tion' was one of finance; none of tlife Catholic clubs had much finance. A member said that the matter had been mentioned iv the annual report of the association, and he wanted to know what was being done to further affiliaI tion. I Mr. H. R. Baigcut stated that there were about 500 players in the Catholic clubs. It was possible that three clubs would leave the Catholic Federation, and one club had already resigned because it did not agree with the federation. Last year inter-club matches had been played among tht Catholic clubs, but some clubs could supply only one court,, and had had to play matches on Sunday until dark. Dissatisfaction was therefore felt, and pressure had been brought to bear upon members of the Federation, but he thought that the Federation was opposed to affiliation, although many of the players were in favour of it. Full particulars of afhbation had been supplied to a deputation from the Catholic clubs, but since the deputation no reply had been received by I the association on the matter. j QUESTION OF FINANCE. j The minutes of what had eventuated when the deputation from the Catholic clubs had been received were read by Mr. Swinburne. There had been over 500 players in the Hutt Valley, said a member, and they had been formed into a sub-association, and membership had grown to 1000. The same position applied to the Catholicclubs, and if the 500 members formed themselves into a sub-association the membership would also grow. It was stated by Mr. J. L. M/Duff that! the Federation wanted the capitation ice reduced from 2s 6d, and when some finality was reached on that point the management committee had something with which to go to the Council. Mr. Swinburne suggested that a letter should be sent to . the Federation. Another suggestion was that a letter should be sent to the secretaries of the individual clubs. On the motion of Mr. Baigent, seconded by Mr. Swinburne, it was decided that a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Chatwin, J. Gribble, and R. W. Lander, should approach the federation on the question of affiliation.
