There were about 30 members and visitors present, all of whom entered into the spirit of the evening and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A novel form of "golfing," In which Hutt proved tho more skilful,'was the star attraction. Of the twelve matches shot Hutt won flvo, Karori i'oiir, and three were "all square," The teams' stroke totals wero; Hutt 58, Karori 81. Hutt thus achieved a double victory, in matches won and the lowest number of points scored. The targets usod represented golf cqi}rses,' complete with "fairway/" "bunkers,": "green," and the "hole." On cacfc if them were 'five irregularshaped black aiming-marks. The "drive on to tho fairway" of the first of these (top left) was fairly simple, in epite of the three "bunkers" whlrii surrounded It. The second fairway {loww left) was the "Iron" stroke. In which, with a good shot, it was possible to land on trie "green," a small ireen circle a quarter pf an Inch in diameter In one corner of, the .bS^jek, well guarded by bunkers. Assuming Uk green Is hit, the next stroke was a ''putt" on number 4 (top right), where there was a chance to hole out, thus training in three strbkeß tho possible, a "birdie." }t,. however, the second shot was on the fairway instead of the grten, the next stroke was then the "approac*"* or "mashio" on to the third or centre aping-mark, where there was also a chance i holing-out for a birdie,: the hole being rej/esented by a %ln circle offset within a lin irreon circle surrounded by an irregu-lar-shaped black fairway and several nasty bunkers. The final strokes wore the "putts" oh the flftb fairway (lower right), where the hole was a %ln circle. When a shot landed In or touched a "bunkor," another had to be fired. "Bogey" for the hole was 4,, nnd the following eight competitors all did the hole in bogey: Ching, Chureher, Mrs. Donkln, Keene, Porter, D. Robertson, Mrs. Staples, and J. Staples. ; . L. Hare, of the visiting team, and V. Barnes, fif.the home team, each scored a fine "birdie," 8, and were presented at the conclusion of the shoot with a handsome cut-glass vase as a memento. Consolation prizes were , presented to the lowest scorer of each team, and afforded X. good deal of amusement. A highly entertaining evening was concluded by supper. Speeches were made by the captainß, Messrs. P. B. Goldfinch aud. W. 3. H. Haase. Complimentary reference was nade to Messrs. R. Porter and J. I. King, who had put in much time and care in preparing the special targets. Mr. Haase said that this form of match was popular in England, but the shoot that night was the first of its kind in New Zealand. Mr. R; Porter instigated It. Mr. Goldfinch said it was a refreshing departure from the more serious side of the sport. He thanked the Karori Club for its hospitality and generosity, and fcr the funprovoking novelty it: had provided. •The services of Mr. D.
