PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Petoiie Borough Council met last night. The. Mayor (Mr. D.. M'Kenzie) presided, and there were also present Councillors V. 'A. >Noble, J. W. Longman, V- E Jacobson, H. A. Ryder, A. Scholefield, E. T. E. Hogg, R. W. Toomath, J. C. Burns, and C. P. Brockelbarik. A letter was received from the Municipal Association saying that in response to a request from the council it had askett the Government to bring down legislation to alleviate the position of local bodies in the collection of rates where State lending departments had extensive operations. The Wellington City Council wrote stating that it would make available to local bodies their first quarter's shares oi the 1931-32 heavy traffic fees, on conditions similar to tnose. of last year. The Petonc Council agreed to /accept any adjustment that might be necessary after the Magistrate's decision on the allocation of the fees has been given, so that in the meantime the City, Council could distribute each quarter the fees collected. The Public Works Department notified the council that owing: to pressure of work it could not give any more assistance in connection with the proposed second road to Korokpro. ' It was decided to thank the Department for its help in the past. The engineer! was asked to peg out the proposed- hew route -.and" to have assessments made. of. the1 present! value and the future value of the land concerned. t On the motion of Councillor. R. W. Toomath, it was decided to send to the committee of'eastern end ratepayers that recently conferred with the council regarding rating' matters a letter expressing the ■ council's appreciation of the fairpess of its report, of\ the conference. ) Twenty-two men of the outside staff of the council wrote offering to work extra time on any job should it. be necessary, without receiving extra pay. This was "to show their appreciation of: the many favours. they had received from the council in the past." , "A very fine letter. It is much appreciated." said the Mayor. The letter! was "received." The chairman of the Petoue West School Committee wrote conveying, thanks to the couucil for assistance in the work recently done on the school grounds. The sanitary inspector reported that in Septemb : one case of scarlet fever, one or pneumonic influenza, and two of pulmonary .tuberculosis were notified. The quarterly report of the municipal librarian' stated that there were 27C subscribers. Sixty-three new books were added to the library. The newly opened juvenile section j had now a membership of 44, and to this branch 43 new books had recently been added. . :
